Quasar Saxophone Quartet

Q-Phonics is a repertoire of nearly 200 saxophone multiphonics created by members of the Quasar Saxophone Quartet.

Multiphonics are an advanced playing technique used by saxophonists to produce multiple notes simultaneously. This technique is based on the manipulation of the column of air inside the instrument, using the tongue, palate and throat to create different pressures that generate harmonics higher than the fundamental notes produced by the saxophone.

Producing multiphonics on the saxophone is a difficult technique to master. It requires great mastery of embouchure and breathing technique, as well as a precise musical ear to adjust intervals and chords. It can also be difficult to maintain the stability of multiphonics, as the slightest variation in air pressure or tongue position can alter the harmonics produced.

The repertoire of multiphonics presented here is aimed as much at saxophonists seeking to develop this technique as at composers wishing to use it in their works. Each sound is represented by an instrument fingering, the notes perceived and sound examples.

This is a one-stop source for documentation and learning of this technique.
